The Texas Dream
Before the New Deal and the GI Bill, Clayton’s family lived in poverty.
Clayton Tucker's grandparents used to tell him stories about how they had to pick cotton, work 12-hour days, and hunt squirrels just to survive. The New Deal changed this by giving his family the bootstraps they needed to lift themselves up.
Fast forward to today: we have teachers being forced to work multiple jobs, minimum wage is a starvation wage, rural Internet is nearly non-existent, parts of our community are running out of water, our infrastructure is crumbling, Killeen has a severe lack of sidewalks and amenities such as swimming pools, the cost of living rises yet wages stagnate, affordable housing is on the decline, 3.7 million adults and 735,000 children lack healthcare, homelessness is on the rise, gang violence harms our community, 22 veterans a day die by suicide, property taxes continue to rise for middle and working-class people while million-dollars-a-day corporations pay nothing, student debt is out of control, retirement systems are dwindling, corporate money has turned our government into a swamp, politicians choose their voters with extreme gerrymandering, families are being separated, the war on drugs is suspending our 4th Amendment Right, senior centers and our foster care system are being critically underfunded, and yet time after time, nothing changes.
Clayton Tucker is here to be the change in the Texas Senate.
FRIENDS, WE NEED A NEW DEAL FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
The Texas Dream is that New Deal.
HEALTHCARE FOR ALL TEXANS
What is the point in having the freedom of speech, assembly, to vote, or any other freedom if you’re too sick to fully utilize them? Healthcare must be made a human right. As such, Clayton Tucker will fight for universal healthcare, aggressively address the veteran suicide and maternal mortality epidemics, lower prescription drug costs, & more.
JOBS & ECONOMIC RIGHTS
Economic empowerment is necessary for personal freedom. As such, Clayton Tucker will fight to bring good jobs to urban and rural Texas, create a living wage, fight the pay gap, & more.
SUPPORT EDUCATION & CHILDREN
As with healthcare, education and strong families are a major cornerstone of everything. Education is the catalyst for prosperity and strong families lead to safe neighborhoods. Clayton Tucker believes we must train and retain the highest-quality teachers, increase school safety, eliminate childhood hunger and homelessness, & more.
PROTECT ENVIRONMENTAL HERITAGE
No society can survive without water. As a former environmental researcher, Clayton walked through villages that were abandoned because they ran out of water. Clayton Tucker will protect our water supply and quality, heavily invest in solar and wind energy, & more.
We must do all that we can to keep our communities safe, but we must not allow ourselves to travel down the dark path of family separation. Mass incarceration for non-violent offenses destroys families, rips apart communities, and goes against who we are as a community and a country. As such, Clayton Tucker will focus on the violent offenders and organized crime who are involved with human trafficking and other violent activities, dismantle the black market by ending the prohibition on cannabis, promote policies that keep families together and strong, will fight to end the school to prison pipeline, & more.
Texas is the friendship state. It's time for our government to reach for that ideal. Clayton will fight to keep families together, advocate for greater legal resources to speed up the immigration process, will protect DREAMers and others going through the process, will pressure Congress and the federal government to find real solutions, & more.
As FDR once said: government is merely organized self-help. We have to organize government to help us—we the people—over the profits of big corporations. As such, Clayton will fight to end gerrymandering to ensure the people choose their electors and not the other way around, enact campaign donation and term limits, remove dark money from politics, and find new methods for government to fund itself instead of over-relying on property taxes.
